Jet Ski Rental – Is It Safe For Children?
Riding jet skis around the lake is one of many fun activities to enjoy in Coeur d’Alene over the summer. However, there are many questions regarding safety, especially when it comes to children. After all, jet skis are complex machines that can be dangerous if misused.
Are you concerned about your child’s safety on a jet ski? To learn more about jet skis and whether they’re appropriate for children, keep reading below.
What are jet skis?
Jet skis are personal watercrafts. Also called water scooters or boatercycles, these machines are recreational and are meant for riding waves.
Jet skis come in many different styles and sizes. You can get single, double, or triple seated ones. Their operation is simple – the rider(s) sits or stands on it and propels it forward with a handle throttle while turning it with the handlebars.
Are they safe for children?
Jet skis are fun but they are still machines that can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Therefore, their safety can be questionable around children.
That being said, there is no reason why children cannot enjoy jet skis. It is recommended that children under the age of 14 only ride on jet skis as passengers. This is because their operation can be difficult for inexperienced riders. After 14, children are allowed to drive them but should do so carefully. Regardless, it’s important that all riders are educated on proper use and safety beforehand.
Jet ski safety
There is a lot that goes into jet ski safety. However, the following rules are a great start to any jet ski rental adventure:
1. Always wear a life jacket
This one is a no brainer. Always make sure that you’re wearing a life jacket on the water, especially when operating a water vehicle. This is to protect you in case you’re in an accident or are thrown from the watercraft at any time.
2. Respect other riders and boaters
Jet skis are small and maneuverable but that doesn’t mean that they have the right of way in all instances. Always respect other riders and boaters. It may be fun to whip the handlebars and practice donuts, but it’s unsafe with others around you and can cause serious accidents.
3. Maintain appropriate speed limits
Yes, there are speed limits on the water. Even though you may feel like they are guidelines rather than rules, it’s incredibly important that you obey the signs and go the appropriate speed limit. This is for your safety and the safety of others.
