Coeur d’Alene then

Coeur d’Alene Idaho and the surrounding area got its start in the late 18th century when french fur traders came to the area seeking to barter with the local tribes. They gave the area the name “Coeur d’Alene” meaning “heart of the awl” as a nod to the local tribe’s intense and stubborn bargaining methods.

Fast forward a hundred years and the area turned into a bustling fort, responsible for timber and mining management on the lake. This fort, called Fort Sherman, is now the local community college.

While the area started out as a town dependent on timber and mining trades, it has since turned into an international travel destination.
